Korea first dispatched athletes to the 15th Deaflympic Games which was held in Los-Angeles, USA in 1985. 29 delegates (21 athletes and 8 officers) were participating in the 16th Games and 36 delegates (25 athletes and 11 officers) from four events - athletic, football, cycling, and table tennis - were participating in the 17th Games. However, nobody could win a medal.
In the 18th Games, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, 40 athletes from five events - athletic, football, table tennis, bowling, and badminton - competed and for the first time, Mr. Kyung Wan Chae from 100m athletic and Ms Hye Yeon Park from table tennis (single) won bronze medals.
The Deaflympics are among the world's fastest growing sports events. More than 3,300 deaf athletes and officials from 74 nations participated in the 20th Summer Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia, in January 2005. Nearly 600 athletes and officials participated in the 16th Winter Deaflympics in Salt Lake City, United States in February 2007.
The membership of Korea was approved during the Governing Board Meeting held in the Nethelands, on 1 August 1984.
